We spent some time on Snapper Island and took heaps of beautiful photos before exploring further afield. I’ve included a couple of pics with this. The designer and builder of the Fission 500, Nigel Shannon, a professional boat builder since 1980 and avid fisherman nearly all his life, has fused his boat building talents and fishing knowledge into a dedicated craft that is perfectly capable to maximum enclosed water fishing scenarios. The succeeding images are of the prototype being built and the molds being taken from the finished boat. The problem is cost and it’s the reason we haven’t seen much appreciable change in the way fiberglass boats are built in 30 years. When Nigel Shannon of Shannon Boats set about creating his beginning fiberglass hull he didn’t follow normal design ideas. And because of the long planing plank the hull floats in around 12cm of water, enabling it to get into shallow areas that would be inaccessible to a deep Dee hull. The fore deck is piece of the deck molding with side decks expansive enough to sit on, and production boats will have nonskid panels molded in. Ahead of the single outboard healthy with direct motor transom mounting is space for a live bait compartment, and the sockets for the helm and passenger seat aft were healthy positioned in relation to the multifunction tiller arm of the two stroke Yamaha 50 fitted. This was thanks to the deep, narrow chines aft which compress wash in the tunnels and not outer the hull. And despite the low topsides, no spray came aboard at any time from running into or across the low river chop. When backing into a slop even with two of us aft the stern had plenty of buoyancy with no water future back through the transom deck scuppers. Back at the well appointed Manning Point ramp (just across from Harrington), Nigel was capable to drive the hull back onto the over engineered prototype custom trailer, which uses Teflon skids and a shaped, carpeted wedge for the hull bottom. The hull sits low on this trailer where the tunnels are over the wheel mudguards and the chines atop the outer trailer frame. Rod Harrison started catching and writing about barramundi when they were quiet known as Palmer Perch. I’m a 54 year used crazy keen fisherman and behind owning this boat, I would never consider buying any other type of boat. For the experienced angler in Freshwater fishing, Rob is there to donate you the appropriate oil on where the fish are biting and what lures are occupied healthy as he is out there every day. Rob unashamedly wants people to catch fish. Rob does not guarantee you will catch a fish, as no guide should, but what he offers is the opportunity to learn where and how to catch a fish. On our trip Rob showed us some shallow water luring techniques that were spot on. We can supply brands such as Wilderness Systems, Perception, Crazy River and Dagger, to name a few. Even though the Tarpon 120 kayaks has exactly what you would expect from a first class craft, it has so much more. Australia has some of the most pretty timbers in the world, and a classic hand crafted boat is one of the best ways to display them. If you grow up around such boats, you’re doomed to be a boat lover all your life.
